Xinjiang internment camps

Updated: Mar 21, 2025

Who are Muslim Uighurs?

There are 12 million Uighurs. Many practices the religion of Islam and reside in north-western china in the region of Xinjiang. Uighurs are a minority group making less than the population. Over the past few years, there has been a mass migration of Han Chinese to Xinjiang. With stigmatization against Uighurs, many of them feel as those their belief and livelihoods are under threat.

What is happening?

New reports found numerous detention camps in the Xinjiang region. The BBC reports there is an estimated report of 380 centers in this region. It is significant to note the Chinese government denied the existence of these camps. Officials now claim they are tackling poverty and religious extremism. Those detained are Muslim Uighurs. Muslim Uighurs are being persecuted for their religious beliefs. They are forced to erase their cultural beliefs and assimilate to Chinese communist ideas.

Nations such as the United States compared these 'centers' to concentration camps. There are millions of civilians incarcerated in these systems. Many reports being religiously persecuted, tortured, and face physical, sexual, and emotional abuse in these camps.
